New exhibition: René GRUAU at Marianne CAT in Marseille
René Gruau and fashion illustration
The Alexis Pentcheff Gallery, an active spur of the Marseille cultural scene and Marianne Cat, temple of fashion and creativity nestled in the heart of the Marseille city, are pleased to present a common project, an exhibition of the most beautiful lithographs by René Gruau ( 1909 - 2004).
It is in this intimate setting that curious and amateurs alike are invited to discover a key player in 20th century fashion. Franco-Italian artist and dandy, Gruau illustrated many women's magazines including Vogue, Fémina, Elle, Marie-Claire and Harper's Bazaar. A virtuoso performer of big names in Haute Couture such as Balmain, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath and Edward Molyneux, he remains above all known for his collaborations with Christian Dior, whom he met in the early 1930s when they both worked for the prestigious Figaro magazine.
Timeless, the works of René Gruau reveal an idealized femininity, full of curves and contrasts, magnified by incessant explosions of joy. Punctuated by large flats of colors and intense contours in India ink, these lithographs combine with pieces offered by the concept store Marianne Cat in order to create and inspire new perspectives on fashion, art and design, until December 8.
